Cyanotypes by Jennifer Ablard
Join us in welcoming Jennifer Ablard as our spotlight artist for June and July.
About the artist: Jennifer is a photographer who is drawn to details. She has been seeing the world through a camera her entire adult life. While she has focused on different subjects at different phases of her life, her work always reflects her love of the outdoors, nature, and the abstract found in everyday life. She’s also drawn to how the same location changes over time. She intends for her work to evoke questions of ‘where?’, ‘how?’ and ‘what?’.
Most recently she has been exploring the alternative photographic process of Cyanotypes. This satisfies her desire for a more process focused practice,
A light-sensitive chemistry is applied to watercolor paper, a photo negative or object is placed on the paper, and the whole thing is exposed to daylight and then processed using tap water. Whatever part of the paper is exposed to sunlight turns blue and the part blocked stays white. She’s enthralled by the unpredictability of the process- each print is unique, subject to the variables of length of exposure to sunlight and the technique used to apply the chemistry! The source photographs are drawn from her significant body of work and she is enjoying seeing old work in a new light
